Town History: The town of Cornelius was originally incorporated as “Liverpool” in 1905. The town’s name was soon changed to Cornelius to honor Joseph Benjamin Cornelius, the principal stockholder in the construction of the town’s cotton mill.
Interstate Access: Cornelius is easily accessed via I-77, exit 28. The interstate divides Cornelius into two sections; the western side and the eastern side. Lake Norman lies on the western side of the interstate, and many waterfront communities are located off of West Catawba Ave, Jetton Rd, Torrence Chapel Road, and Bethel Church Road. On the eastern side of the interstate, you will find a blend of old and new. A renovated “Main St” is located on East Catawba Ave and North Main Street, featuring antique stores and boutiques.
Parks: Two parks on Lake Norman are located in Cornelius; Jetton Park and Ramsey Creek Park.
Population: Cornelius is a thriving town with over 29,000 residents.
